Cisco has unveiled its first entry into the tablet computer space: the Cius, a 7-inch HD business collaboration device running the Google Android operating system.

The Cisco Cius was revealed earlier today by CEO John Chambers at a conference in Las Vegas. Like most Cisco devices, the Cius is designed with the business user in mind. It is a virtual desktop and telecommunication machine, complete with a front facing 720p HD camera and a second, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. It’s smaller than an iPad, with a 7-inch screen and weighing only 1.15 pounds.

The device is designed to be mobile. It runs a modified version of the Google Android operation system, which is becoming more and more popular for use in tablet devices. It also comes with 3G capability, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (Bluetooth) and Micro-USB support. Cisco claims that the device will go for eight hours “under normal usage.” As a bonus, the battery is detachable.

The key to this tablet is the suite of Cisco software products that it will run. The list includes Cisco Quad, Show and Share, WebEx, Presence and Cisco TelePresence; it also supports Unified Communications Manager. It looks like these apps will run as modified Android (Android) applications.

Any tablet, even an enterprise-focused tablet, inevitably compete with the iPad. However, Cisco’s device does sound like it has a lot of business features that the iPad does not, especially its deep integration with Cisco telecommunication products. The inclusion of two cameras for teleconferencing alone could make it a popular buy with enterprise companies.

Customer trials begin in the third quarter, meaning that you could see Cius tablets floating around as early as next month. However, the device won’t officially launch until early 2011, right around the time Apple is likely to unveil the next version of the iPad.

« Adobe officially launched its digital viewer technology for developers on Tuesday. The software complements Adobe’s recently announced Creative Suite 5 collection of design and development applications.
Publishers using CS5 can build digital magazine layouts that contain the same design elements as those in periodicals found on news racks, while also containing interactive capabilities associated with online publications. « It’s safe to say that if you are already working in InDesign CS5, you’ll be well on your way to producing a beautiful digital version of your publication, » David Burkett, VP and general manager of creative solutions for Adobe, said in a statement.

Adobe plans to make its latest viewer software available on as many hardware platforms as possible, including smartphones and the emerging market for slate computers like the Apple iPad. The strategy is similar to the company’s approach with its PDF format for business document creation. The PDF viewer is widely available at no charge for multiple platforms, while Adobe sells tools for creating documents.
Wired magazine, a Conde Nast publication, built its recently released reader application for the iPad using Adobe’s latest technology. The Wired reader, available through Apple’s App Store for $4.99, lets readers watch video and slideshows, view 360-degreee images and rotate content in vertical and horizontal modes. Another feature made possible through Adobe technology is touch-based navigation.

The Wall of Chile (Muro de Chile) for the Chilean Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World’s Fair features a 4-meter-long (13’) and 1.2-meter-high (4’) display wall that enables visitors to access more than six hours of video and thousands of photographs from historical archives, including satellite, natural, and terrestrial images that detail Chile’s culture and character. The wall will appear at the Chilean Pavilion through October 31, 2010.

Lors d’une conférence en ouverture de la Worldwide developers conference d’Apple, son PDG, Steve Jobs, a annoncé le lancement d’une nouvelle version de son téléphone, baptisée iPhone 4, qui permettra notamment la vidéoconférence, mais uniquement d’iPhone 4 à iPhone 4. L’appareil sera en vente à partir du 24 juin en France. IOS4, la nouvelle version du système d’exploitation des téléphones d’Apple, sera lancée le 21 juin pour les modèles 3G et 3GS.

Outre un nouveau design, le téléphone inclura un écran haute résolution, avec quatre fois plus de pixels que celui de l’iPhone 3G. Avec une résolution de 960 x 640 pixels, l’écran du téléphone contiendra presque autant de pixels que celui d’un iPad. L’appareil sera également doté d’un processeur plus puissant. Une nouvelle caméra permettra de passer des appels en visioconférence.

La nouvelle version de l’iPhone est donc conforme au prototype que s’était procuré le site Gizmodo. Le site, qui a fait l’objet d’une plainte de la part d’Apple, s’est vu refuser l’accès à la conférence.

PUBLICITÉ INTÉGRÉE

Devant une audience de développeurs, Steve Jobs a également détaillé le système de publicité d’Apple, iAds. Apple vendra et hébergera les publicités – et reversera 60 % des profits aux développeurs. Apple touche 30 % du produit des ventes d’applications.

Le système iAds sera lancé le 1^er juillet, positionnant Apple comme concurrent indirect de Google. Avec son système Adwords, Google est le leader du marché de la publicité en ligne.« Nous pensons que ce système va représenter 48 % du marché de l’affichage publicitaire sur mobile aux Etats-Unis, d’ici la fin de l’année », a estimé Steve Jobs.

Google repousse la sortie de son système d’exploitation à l’automne et lui promet un succès retentissant dès les premiers jours.

Google Chrome OS n’arrivera pas cet été. C’est ce qu’a affirmé Sundar Pichai, vice-président de la division Produits de Google au Computex. « Nous travaillons pour le publier cet automne » indique-t-il, avant d’ajouter que « nous attendons de toucher des millions d’utilisateurs dès le premier jour ».

L’OS libre pour netbooks de Google sera destiné à une utilisation en cloud, notamment au travers de tous les services de la firme de Mountain View, comme le fait déjà Jolicloud. Le but pour Google est d’offrir un OS rapide ramené à une simple fonction de terminal. Il sera d’ailleurs uniquement fourni sur des netbooks à disques durs SSD.

Annoncé en juillet 2009, Google en a régulièrement publié les sources qui ont donné naissance au projet Chromium OS (en référence au navigateur libre Chromium sur lequel se base Chrome) téléchargeable par les plus impatients.

Face au boycott inflexible d’Apple envers Flash, Adobe renonce et cesse tout investissement futur sur cette plateforme. Son nouvel Eldorado se nomme Android.

Au diable l’iPhone, vive Android ! C’est en résumé le message qu’a délivré Adobe, par la voix de Mike Chambers, le chef produit responsable de Flash. Il a annoncé que l’outil inauguré dans la nouvelle suite CS5 lancée la semaine dernière ne disposera d’aucun développement dans le futur. Une décision qui fait suite au dernier tacle d’Apple qui a modifié le contrat développeurs del’iPhone OS 4 pour bannir l’utilisation d’outils autres que ceux qu’il préconise : API Apple et langages de programmation Objective-C, C, C++ ou JavaScript.

Adobe cesse donc tout investissement sur l’iPhone et va recentrer le travail de ses équipes sur Android pour y apporter Flash sur les smartphones mais également les tablettes Internet qui se préparent. Des préversions de Flash 10.1 et AIR 2.0 pour Android sont en test. Mais Adobe compte également arriver en force dans les BlackBerry, les smartphones de Palm et ceux fonctionnant avec Windows Phone 7. « Nous sommes au commencement d’un changement significatif dans l’industrie et je pense qu’au final les plateformes ouvertes l’emporteront sur le type de plateforme fermée et verrouillée qu’Apple essaie de créer », assène Mike Chambers en guise de conclusion.
